Just a few years ago it seemed people thought the idea of purchasing “clothing” through the internet was absurd. How would you know if it fits? What if it doesn’t fit? What if my credit card number gets stolen? Those were just a few of the many questions I had myself just a few short years ago. We’ve all gotten used to shopping online – and to be honest there have been times where I felt more comfortable to give my credit card information to a computer system (designed to keep my card secure) than to a waiter at the next chain restaurant (who gets paid minimum wage).

The internet, and online shopping in particular, has significantly changed the art industry as well. We have more choices at our fingertips than ever before. Visiting the sometimes intimidating and cold art galleries is no longer required for someone who wants to have something else on their wall than mass-produced “art” from a (Swedish) big box store. With many art websites offering money back guarantees, secure shopping and excellent customer support, you no longer have to feel as though purchasing art online is Russian roulette.

Here are some useful hints and tips:

  • Search and search some more: Without the hassles of walking/driving from one gallery to another and often limited gallery hours you have more time at your disposal to do your research. You will have the ability to view many different artworks and customization options from the comfort of your home. For me that means a greater chance to find a new work of art I will fall in love with.
  • Take your Time: Yes buying off the internet is far from perfect so follow your heart and take your time. Send the image to your friends, get in touch with the artist and take advantage of the many gallery website features available at your disposal, such as “view-to-scale, finishing options, background colors, zoom, framing options, etc”. Ask questions if you want by emailing the artist directly – most of them will love to hear from you (I certainly do).
  • Protect Yourself: Read up on the website. Find out how long its been in business. See if the website provides secure shopping and secured online purchases. Check if the artwork will come with a guarantee that you feel comfortable with, and find out if they have a return policy that you find reasonable.

When you have done your homework, support your artists, buy their work and enjoy your new artwork purchased through the future of art shopping with confidence.
