It may look like a polar bear that got a little lost and wandered too far south – but these photographs are of a very rare Spirit Bear: the rare “blonde” black bear of Canada’s West Coast.
The Kermode bear, also known as the “spirit bear”, is an off-shoot of the black bear living in the lust coastal regions of British Columbia, Canada. They’re somewhat of a mystical creature, holding a prominent place in the story-telling traditions of the indigenous people of the area. They’re extremely rare and nearly impossible to see in the wild, despite their remarkable colour. The white or cream-coloured coats, similar to polar bears, is due to an unique gene in the subspecies. Some people call them albinos or think they’re related to polar bears – both of which statements are incorrect.See more in my art gallery
