My biggest problem in building a business? There are many – but the one I struggle with the most lately is not that people don’t buy what I’m offering. It’s not that everybody tells me they’re not interested. It’s not a lack of inspiration, time, or even money. It’s not even the invoicing and bookkeeping part – that’s easy. The biggest struggle I’m facing is the fact nobody responds anymore. You might as well call social media anti-social media: some of my “friends” seem to have a real issue with responding to emails, messages, texts, voicemails, and so on. I’m debating on going back to mail pigeons – but they don’t seem to like Canadian winters and flock to warmer places – smart as they are. So I’m left to figure it out on my own.

Let me be clear. I never expected all my friends to line up and buy my pictures – or books. Although I’d be the first to admit that books are easier to sell than fine art photography. Shelf space is usually easier to obtain than somebody’s wall space, simply because they tend to have less of the latter category. So I get that. The part I don’t get is the simple ignorance of invitations, emails, direct messages and the like. Isn’t that the point of the whole social media thing? It’s an interesting dynamic.

The answer to my struggle? Have a read of my “new networking” chapter of my happiness book. The problem is never “the rest of the world” – it’s always me. I can only take responsibility for what I do. So by continuing to engage with the “mediocre club” (as my dear friend Jack Canfield calls it) I will continue to get the same results. That’s not what I’m after. I’m looking to grow in life, learn and experience new things. I want to surround and associate myself with the people that share that mindset. Once you realize that and open yourself up for that opportunity, one by one they start to appear. The question is not are they ready, but are you?
