Despite what it may look like sometimes, social media is designed to allow people to connect to
one another. We’ve come a long way since primitive text-form updates, and, for better or worse, people share anything and everything using some of the biggest social media sites. The rise of social media created something unprecedented in history: a global online social community. You can stay in touch with your friends, but also have access to millions of social media users around the globe. You have the power to reach people anywhere on the globe – as long as there is a reliable internet connection.

Entrepreneurs quickly realized the huge potential of social media. They are particularly interested in the ability to reach almost anyone. I don’t call Facebook a social media company, it’s a marketing business selling your information. Nothing else. For every post from a friends, there’s at least two ads: one above, one underneath the “social” post. Social media is a marketing channel. If you are a business owner and have deep pockets, advertising can drive you unlimited traffic that you can convert to paying customers. It’s just like prime-time advertising on television. It works, as long as you have the money to back your campaign. As a creative entrepreneur, or “artrepreneur”, I don’t believe social media advertising is the right use of your money. And believe me when I say I’ve tried.

So, how can you effectively use social media to share the things you’ve made?  In this article, I’ll share 10 social media tips from my course that will help you leverage the power of social media in the most effective way possible – without wasting money on advertisements.

Let’s get started…

1. Be active and interesting

If you’re boring in normal life, you’re also boring on social media. Do (and share) something interesting! Updates that just talk about business offers, product offers and services can be really dry and boring. You have to think of ways on how to make dry topics sound interesting. And it starts with you. Always think of new and interesting things to post. A social media page must never be stagnant even for only a short period of time. If your page has no activity, your subscribers will leave.

2. Link to your website

Providing a link to your official website shows authenticity. Vice versa, your official website must provide a link that will direct people to your social media pages.

3. Use The Right Hashtags

Hashtags may well be the modern day SEO. Without tags, the posts you share will stay invisible in the social media archives. Make your posts visible by adding as many tags as possible.

4. Start a Group

On Facebook, you have the option of creating a group account. Especially after recent algorithm changes, a group helps to get additional exposure in people’s timelines.

5. Avoid All Negativity

Taking care of your personal brand means avoiding comments and posts that may get you a bad reputation. Steer clear from any and all negative posts and comments – no matter how upset you are.

6. Use Rich Media posts

Use images and videos to spice up your posts. Sometimes, mere words are not enough to get the message across. Add some excitement to go with the message. Just make sure the image or video you add is related to the post.

7. Maintain a good follower/following ratio

If you are following more people than the number of people following you, it doesn’t reflect well on your account. There should always be more people that follow you. Unfollow some people if you have to restore the balance.

8. Be consistent across multiple social media accounts

Do you have ten or so messages that you need to post? Do not post them all at once. Otherwise, some of the messages might not get noticed. Have a timeline and plan when to share each update. Managing multiple social media accounts and staying on top of them can become time-consuming and difficult. Use a tool like Hootsuite to manage all (or at least most) of your social media accounts from one place.

9. Don’t compete

Admit it. Your competitor might be better at handling their social media account. Still, I don’t believe in competition. Social media is meant to share and contribute. Simply learn from their expertise. Do how they do things.

10. Engage your audience

Be interesting. Ask questions. Interact. Social media is an awesome way to get valuable feedback on new things you created. Did you recently make some changes to your website? See how your customers like them. They probably have some suggestions that you didn’t think of.
