Busyness kills creativity: how to get laser focus on what you really want

We’re often so busy running from one event or meeting to another, that we barely have time to breathe in between. We fill our calendars with meetings, are constantly on our email and social media just to make sure we don’t miss out on anything.
All those activities introduce a lot of clutter if we don’t put them in the right place. Sir Ken Robinson said, “email attempted to solve a problem we never had and it continues to introduce problems we can do without”.
I’m not opposed against technology at all, and I do enjoy all my latest smart devices, however I dislike the amount of interruption in my day they introduce. The constant stream of emails and other notifications turn my devices into a symphony of bells and whistles. I’ve turned most notifications off, so that I’m only getting notifications that require my immediate attention: a phone call, or text message. Even for calls and text messages I wonder whether it’s really necessary to attend to those right away, abandoning whatever else I was doing for a while, hoping I’ll re-catch my train of thought later. Text messages I can respond to later, and even most phone calls can initially go to my assistant or voicemail. Quieting all those distractions has been a powerful tool in allowing me to focus on the task at hand.

Contrary to popular belief multitasking does not make anyone more productive. When you take the concept of eliminating distractions to the inside world, I found that clearing out the busy pile of clutter on a mental level helps me became more calm, more happy, and as a result more productive and focused on the things I want to do. Most successful people have adopted some form of meditation practice into their daily routine. Even if it’s just taking ten minutes out of every day to be quiet, and sit in silence, tuning out all the outside distractions and letting your mind and thoughts just be there without judgment.
My latest Happiness book shares a more detailed approach and practical steps about focusing on what truly matter. It even helps you discover what it is you’re truly passionate about – because with all the modern day distractions figuring out what your passion and vision for your life is might be a challenge of it’s own.
