The Reason Most Diets And Small Business Ideas Fail

It seems everyone wants to change their life these days. But contrary to popular belief, following your passions and living a life based on your dreams does not require a major change. Even if it does, it’s not something I would recommend. Doing so would be a very irresponsible recommendation to make. I’m a firm believer in evolution rather than revolution. Change small things at a time, test new ideas on a small scale first and see what sticks. Focus on adding instead of removing. Because when you add new things, the old will disappear on it’s own.

Add Something Good

Adding good things to change your life is a lot more fun than forcefully removing the old, and it will work miracles in your life as it has in mine. Let’s look at a comparison. The reason most diets fail is they focus on removing and eliminating “bad” food. No more carbs, no more meat, no more of this or that. I love ice cream, Indonesian food and an array of other products that would make most nutritional advisors cringe. I’m not saying any of that is healthy for me. I just enjoy those things, and cutting them out of my life completely is simply not something I’m interested in.

Instead, I changed my diet by adding a lot of the good things to it: vegetables, fruits, nuts, and other whole, unprocessed foods. Very quickly my body started liking those things, and as I started to feel and think better I naturally wanted more of it. I lost weight, felt healthier and overall did much better.

Life Changing Change

My approach to my diet worked to change my life too. First I was focusing on the things I didn’t like that caused me stress, and I was trying to forcefully remove those. That didn’t work, as it caused me even more stress. Instead, I shifted my attention to the things I loved doing, the things that felt good, and adding more of those into my life. As a result, my whole life changed.

The same goes for building a small business. It doesn’t require a radical, life changing move or even quitting your job. Even if you work a full-time job there’s always some time left in the day that you can choose to fill with whatever you’re passionate about. If you choose to spend that time in front of the television with a big bag of potato chips that’s a choice you make, but maybe there are others things you can add instead that will allow you to add some additional income. And who knows, sooner or later that little extra side income might replace things you enjoy less today.
