Having created several online courses now on a variety of topics, it’s safe to say I love using online video. When done correctly, it takes your message from another impersonal internet-expression to a personal connection with your audience.

Here’s a little video we created as a personal welcome for my fine art photography website:

The reason we created this video is that selling art is very personal. I think it’s important to have a personal connection when buying a work of art that’s created by a “living artist”. I’ve done a lot of art events and gallery shows, and what makes those fun to do is the ability to connect with people that enjoy my photographs – as well as the ideas about travel, freedom and happiness behind them. It’s those ideas and conversations that inspired me to write my Freedom Project books. When selling anything online that personal touch is somewhat lost, which I’ve attempted to recreate using a welcome video.

Building a fine art photography business is all about the personal touch. If someone wants to buy a mass produced work of art they’ll go to the famous Swedish furniture box store – but there comes a time in life where people want something more personal, something they know the story behind. With the resources available today I think the video establishes that personal connection as much as possible on a website, and invites people to start a relationship with the artist that over time will help them with their purchase decision.

In producing the video we tried to keep it simple, and not “overproduce” anything. The goal was to get the same message across as what I would say to someone at an art event or show.

In the end, it’s important to be yourself and stick to doing what you do best. I got the help of a videographer to help me with my videos. Photography and videography are different things – don’t be fooled by the fact you might be able to use the same camera to capture both. Get advice needed from a specialist (fellow artist) where needed and support each other.

This site has some great ideas and templates for making animated videos online that you can use for any message you’d like to share – whether it’s a presentation, a landing page for your next book, project, or startup company. Give it a shot.
