One of my biggest pet peeves: people not showing up for meetings on time, or not at all. Without notice. That’s just terrible from an integrity standpoint. And a waste of my time. I run my schedule on Dutch time: if you’re not 15 minutes early, you’re already late.
Let’s take a closer look at integrity. Wikipedia defines integrity as “the basing of one’s actions on an internally consistent framework of principles. Depth of principles and adherence of each level to the next are key determining factors. One is said to have integrity to the extent that everything he does and believes is based on the same core set of values. Behaviors within the concept of integrity include: honesty, sincerity, truthfulness, keeping one’s word and agreements, punctuality, ethics, fairness and justice.”
How You Do One Thing
Long story short, you could summarize this as “how you do one thing, is how you do everything”. If you’re late for a meeting, there might be an underlying trend. There’s probably different areas of your life where the same “lateness” plays a more important role than you realize. It’s not about questioning one’s integrity, but realizing where your integrity lies and whether it aligns to the people in your life.
The power of your personal integrity becomes clear when you accept that everything you do is guided by your behaviours. They are the yardstick by which your life is guided. By moving the yardstick you can cultivate the power to do and be anything you want. It’s holding yourself accountable to the standards that you uphold for your life.
Your Mission Statement
Many companies have some form of business conduct guides, or “rules of engagement”, which all of their employees must abide by. These policies ensure that employees, customers and suppliers will all get a fair and consistent experience. Similar to creating a mission statement for your life, taking control of your personal integrity means having a set of these “rules of engagement“ for your life and interactions with others. How you do one thing, is how you do everything.
The power of integrity lies within each and every one of us. You can discover the power of integrity when you commit to personal accountability and making choices in alignment with your personal mission statement. When you commit to a set of standards for your life, in everything you do and say, you will discover that the power of integrity opens a whole new lifestyle for you.
Take Life To The Next Level
With integrity as your guide, you will never again have to settle for less because your actions and words will mark you as an exceptional individual, someone to be followed and to be listened to. When you are locked into a life of integrity, you will feel powerful and self confident and you will exhibit a magnetic presence and an aura of leadership to those you interact with. With the power you gain from your life of integrity, you will become successful in all areas of your life to the same degree of the standards you have set for yourself.
