When is the last time you heard about a toxic workplace, family, relationship – or anything “toxic”, really. It’s a popular term. A lot of things seem to be “toxic” these days. You hear about it all the time. Meanwhile everyone also talks about self-love and self-care.  Is there an unexplored disconnect here? The difference between the two is that almost nobody practices self-care and self-love…

Honouring your preferences

Instead of waiting for all-the-way, full-on “toxic” before changing something, self-care could mean to take action and change something simply because you don’t like it? It didn’t have to get all the way “toxic”, but you could change something in your life, even just out of a slight preference for things to be different?

In my Happiness book I share my not so pretty story about depression and how I initially used travel as a mechanism to get away from a life I didn’t even like to begin with. In that process of self-discovery, I’ve burned myself out several times. I was working too hard, trying too hard. I was trying to make a living in a toxic work environment that wasn’t in alignment with my values, let alone goals, to begin with. If I were to make a list of the most toxic workplaces I’ve ever encountered in my consulting career, many of you would be surprised. Good thing I don’t kiss-and-tell. Instead, I’d much rather focus on working with goal-oriented people who choose to build something of their own instead

Your core values

Long story short, happiness is about the core of your life, the things you build your life around that truly matter to you. That core should always be built on a foundation of joy. If you could change one thing today, what would really make you happy? What are your vision, passion, and purpose to be on this planet? Why are you here?

When asked by one of my mentors and teachers, having to write down my goals and getting clear on what they were for me caused some real stress and discomfort. I didn’t have a clue as to what I truly wanted. As an introverted people-pleaser, I had never asked myself what I wanted, what it would mean to be really me?

Attempting to write down my goals forced me to think about what I wanted, and get very specific about what that would look like. I decided on what I wanted, how much and by when I was planning to attain it. Turns out my why, the reason I love doing the things I’m most passionate about, was my purpose. No need to overthink your passion. You’re probably already living it today, or you’re upset about not living it. Whatever shows up for you most is what you care about most, what you’re passionate about most.

Accepting what is

For many years I’ve been overthinking my passion, thinking it had to be something more complicated than the things I already deeply cared about. To find and uncover your passion, you can start to simply improve your self-awareness. Even that sounds more complicated than it really is. It starts with getting to know yourself – the good, the bad and the ugly, and honouring your preferences in everything you do, whether big or small.

Being in a bad mood doesn’t necessarily mean you have to have a bad day. Your feelings and emotions are part of your internal GPS: your guidance system that shows you whether you’re on the right track towards your most important goals, or not. This is not the time to play it safe and see what’ll happens next, but to boldly take a step in the direction of your dreams. Don’t wait until the crisis is over, start today. Your world is changing either way. You can start taking action towards your future goals, even today.

“If you work on something a little bit every day, you end up with something that is massive.” ~ Kenneth Goldsmith
