Great things happen to those who don’t wait

Many people spend a lot of time analyzing, planning and organizing various parts of their life, but they fail to take action. Successful people also analyze, plan and organize, but they never fail to take action. When you take action things start to happen. Personally, I learn much more quickly while I am in action, doing something, anything: things become clear, and the next steps become obvious.
“To be successful, you have to do what successful people do, and successful people are highly action-oriented”.
Often, we tend to not take action because of some fear. What if it all goes wrong? Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric, said that mistakes can often be as good as a teacher as success. There is no point in being too cautious, because even if I make a mistake (or two), I can learn from them, and can still achieve my goals. One thing is certain: by not doing something I will definitely not reach my goals, regardless of how big or small they might be. You cannot think your way out of fear, you have to act your way out of fear.
If I want something in my life that I’ve never had before, I probably will have to do something I’ve never done in order to get there. If I want to be successful, I always have to find ways to improve. I need to look at my goals, and find out what I need to improve to achieve them better and faster. If you want your life to stay the same, doing what you’ve always done probably will be good enough. But if you want the next chapter of your life to be different, you have to do something different.
That doesn’t mean you have to radically change everything. Taking small, achievable steps is enough. That way you won’t get overwhelmed and discouraged because something seems too difficult to achieve or do. Start with something easy – and be patient with yourself: to improve takes time. Success usually does not happen overnight, but if you improve and learn a little bit every day, one day you will get there.
Persistence is one of the most important qualities of successful people. There are always a lot of obstacles in life, so without persistence it is impossible to achieve much. Most people quit just before reaching their goals, because they lack persistence. But “If you hang in there long enough, you will eventually reach your goal.”
So when are you going to start? There is no perfect time, and the stars will never align – so let’s start now, today. As Jack Canfield says, “Once you start moving and producing results, things begin to happen that will take you further and faster than you ever imagined”.
This article is based on Success Principles #13, 20 and 22. I’ve learned about the success principles from my friend and mentor Jack Canfield, and in this post I shared some of the things he taught me. In the 10th anniversary edition of his book “The Success Principles”, Jack Canfield presents the sixty-seven principles which, if learned and practiced, can help everyone to realize their goals.
