Are you happy? What does happiness even mean? Many of us are not sure about that. Happiness can not be easily defined. Also, most of us are not living happily. Despite all the technological advances, unhappiness somehow appears to be the curse of our modern age.

What is happiness? When I am feeling happy, it may mean that I just got something that I love, something that makes me happy. Imagine someone who just won a big jackpot in Las Vegas? They usually look pretty happy. Meet them after few years, after they spent all their money, and maybe got slapped with a (property) tax bill or two, and you will find the same person very unhappy.

As a photographer I can confirm that most couples look happy on their wedding day, despite maybe a few happy tears here and there. Meet them after few years in the divorce court and you will know that happiness was not their nature, but only a reaction to circumstances.

Can we remain happy at all times? It is difficult, but I think it’s in our human nature, in our spirit, to try as best as we can. Decide to smile and feel happy at all the times. Even if you learn that you have suffered a big loss, look for the happy. No amount of unhappiness will ever get you back what you’ve lost. But happiness despite the circumstances will give you the confidence and strength to fight against the odds and come out as a winner.
