To experience travel there is no need to go far from home. A city trip to the next town over can be just as exciting as one across the planet. I like to get away at least once a month for a short trip, and traveling across the globe every few weeks is not always going to happen. While the extended trips to different continents are nice, I’m happy that the experience of travel can also be found much closer to home.
Of all the North American cities I have visited, here is my top 5. Please feel free to share your additions to my list in the comments below.
1. New York City
Known as the Big Apple, New York City is the perfect destination for your next adventure. From taking in the views from the Empire State Building, marveling at the Statue of Liberty, or picnicking in Central Park, there is something for everyone. The city hosts the famous Time’s Square where you can take in dinner and a Broadway show. If that is not your speed, the shopping options alone could keep you tied up all day. Be sure to wander by a flea or street market for unexpected finds and finish your day in one of the many revered restaurants.

No matter where your interests lie, you can always find something to get excited about in this Midwestern metropolis. Chicago is often compared to New York – but I couldn’t disagree more. The city is its own entity, and has its own character. Expand your mind with culture by exploring Chicago museums. Enjoy eating with the city’s rich and diverse culinary landscape. Grab an architecture cruise to learn more about the Windy City’s famous skyscrapers like the Wills and Tribune Towers. The 13-block stretch of Michigan Avenue, dubbed The Magnificent Mile or Mag Mile, is home to three indoor malls and 50 flagship stores including high-end designers. Then you can dance the night away in the bustling Chicago nightlife.
3. Las Vegas
Although this destination is commonly referred to as Sin City, there are many great things for families, couples, and groups to see and do. The dancing fountains at the Bellagio, the volcano erupting at The Mirage, The Fremont Street Experience; all this and you have not even entered a building yet. Step out of your comfort zone and take a chance at one of the many high-octane experiences Las Vegas has to offer. Maybe a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, skydiving, the roller coaster atop the Stratosphere or New York New York, drive an actual race care at the motor speedway. If that is not your speed, settle into a show, a dinner at one of the many famous restaurants and end the night on a gamble in one of the local casinos.

4. New Orleans
If you are looking for a good time, NOLA is the placed to be! Whether this is your first time to New Orleans or you’re a seasoned visitor, the city’s infectious spirit is sure to captivate. This city is overflowing with excitement, personality, history, and culture. Walk through the French Quarter, the oldest neighborhood in NOLA, for unique shopping, beautiful architecture, and cuisine specific to the region. As the birthplace of jazz, music is an integral part of the city and the nightlife is bustling with fun. The city offers a range of tours including history and haunts if you dare.
Miami is an electric city on the southeastern tip of Florida. Its Cuban influence can be felt and seen throughout the city. From the Art Deco-lined shores of the beautiful Miami Beach to the couture-filled streets of the Design District, Miami is a city that manages to simultaneously pay tribute to its storied past and to remain on the cutting edge of what’s next. Enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving in the warm waters. Splurge with some culinary delights from one of the many food trucks. Relax and let your stress melt away at one of the luxurious spas. Jump into the bustling nightlife and dance the night away. You are sure to find something in Miami for every member of the family.
