Don’t overspend on travel if you can’t afford it. In terms of spending money, my rule of thumb is that if you can’t afford to buy something twice, you can’t afford it. That goes for travel, as well as pretty much anything else money can buy. Following that rule, being issued a travel voucher due to Covid19 travel restrictions is less painful than when you put your entire life savings on the line for that trip to Bora Bora you were never able to take.

Did you read my article on airline refunds? I asked the unpopular question if some people overspent on their travel to begin with. Instead of blaming the airlines, Covid19, the economy, or all of the above, it allows us to take responsibility and do something different. It allows us to look at our options instead, and start planning for future travel.

So forget Bora Bora. You don’t always have to go far to have the experience of getting away. For the foreseeable future, finding escapes within driving distance of home may be the best and safest option.

Making better future travel plans

Despite not being able to travel, you can start looking at options to plan for future travel experiences. Even if you have overspent on travel before, you probably don’t need to spend as much to travel well. As I’ve shared before, the #1 rule I teach in my Travel Revolution program is to pay less than average for an above average experience.

Even though I often fly for free, the focus is always on the experience, not on the price. Getting an upgrade to business class on a free ticket is, as they say, priceless. Getting a voucher on a “non refundable” ticket you paid less than average (or maybe $0) for, is also far less of a problem than when you broke the bank on that trip of a lifetime. Airlines make money by selling the same seat for a different price to different people… so take control and stop paying too much for the same economy class experience.

Better options await you

Throughout 2020, I’ve continually put my travel hacking principles to work meaning I have collected more points and vouchers than I’ll need for years to come once well be able to travel again. That’s not meant to impress you, but to impress upon you that you can do the same, if you wish. You can start by checking out the Travel Revolution today. We’re offering a complimentary preview for a limited time. Because we will travel again.
