The US Land border is finally open to Canadian travellers. It’s also open to European travellers by the way, so Canada didn’t get any sort of neighbourly preferential treatment, in case you were wondering.
Either way, here’s what you need to know in case you were considering a trip south this winter. I haven’t been to Vegas or New York for a while, and feel like I’m overdue for a trip. Are we there yet?
The State of Affairs
I don’t think we’re quite there yet, but we’re definitely heading in the right direction. In the last weeks and months there’s been a number of positive developments for Canadian travellers. Here’s the executive summary:
- Proof of full vaccination will soon be required to board any plane in Canada, whether travelling domestically or internationally.
- Canada has dropped their negative travel advisory, which didn’t really mean anything.
- About half the provinces are ready for the “national” version of the Canadian vaccine passport, which likely will be some version of the provincial apps. Alberta’s version of the QR code isn’t ready yet.
- The biggest issue for Canadian travellers is the PCR test that Canada still requires upon return to the country. Canada is considering scrapping the pricey and intrusive covid-19 PCR test for travellers – but still wants to replace it with an antigen test, even for fully vaccinated travellers.
Returning to Canada
With international travel slowly resuming, Canada’s test requirement to return to the country, even for fully vaccinated travellers is still prohibiting us from travel, including seeing friends, family and loved ones abroad. Currently, this test is still required when returning to Canada by land or air, and you may get “randomly” selected at the airport for another test on arrival.
A lot of fully vaccinated travellers would like to see this test requirement removed. Persisting with the testing requirement begs the question whether the government believes these vaccines actually work? I do and did my duty when it was my turn to get vaccinated. In exchange, I’d like to enjoy my freedom again and be able to travel. So come on Canada, let’s scrap the test altogether for fully vaccinated travellers.
