Have you ever had one of those awkward conversations where things don’t go entirely the way you had imagined them – and you feel quite naive afterwards? Well I did. As some of you know I created an online course that’s sharing my story of becoming a writer, published author and eventually best-selling author. I created it for a very simple reason. After my first book got published so many people asked me how the F* I did it. How did I manage to not only write a book and find a publishing home for it, but turn it into a number one bestselling hit. I never thought much of it. It was just a story I wanted to share to the benefit of others. But with thousands of books published every single day, ending up on the number one of that pile is certainly not an accomplishment to think lighthy off. According to my publisher, and fans, that is. I didn’t care as much: I was just sharing a message I had to share with the world.
A Method To The Madness: Becoming A Published Author
While there is definitely a method to the madness that you can follow, it takes a bit more explaining than I could do over a cup of coffee. Wanting to provide a practical and useful answer to the repeating question, I set out to create an online course helping wanna-be authors become published authors. Because getting over that first page is trickier than you might think.
On my path I’ve learned a lot from others, and while I know better than to name any names in this post, I’ve contacted some who I admired to see if they were interested in partnering with me to help budding authors. The response overall has been overwhelming, which has been a real encouragement. Except one. The conversation quickly turned to “are you using any of my material”. I’m definitely not using anyones material, as I was simply creating a way of sharing my story in the hope to help others along the way. The conversation didn’t go much further than that, though – and in some way I felt stupid for asking in the first place.
You already have what it takes
Personally, I don’t believe in competition. Competition is based on fear, on a sense of “not enough”. I believe we are able to achieve whatever our minds can conceive and believe. There’s a universal law that won’t allow you to dream a dream if you didn’t have it in you to accomplish that very dream. Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.” That makes it your moral imperative to replace all your negative expectations with positive ones. Only by taking the goal of finding freedom as an absolute, your mind can start to work towards the exact outcome you want, or something even better.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.
People often do not reach their goals, not because they lack required skills, but because they don’t believe they can reach them. Most people, who ever accomplished anything in life, had no idea about how they were going to do it. Many of them didn’t have a college degree on their wall. They didn’t have decorative letters or university titles surrounding their names. They just believed that the work they did had to be done, regardless of the outcome. Not doing the work they believed in was not an option, and they found a way to make it possible. Despite setbacks, they continued to believe in the importance of their mission and their ability to make it happen. They took control by taking responsibility, and realized that if they wanted to create the great and successful life they desired, they had to believe they could make it happen. They felt a sense of urgency behind the work they were doing.
A Sense Of Urgency
That sense of urgency is lacking from most modern day passions. Encouraging anyone to follow their dream is pointless if they don’t believe themselves it’s their duty and birthright to get that meaningful work done. We’ve become complacent, being all too comfortable within the mediocre zone of our mind’s conditioning. Do you care enough about your goals and dreams to treat them with urgency? You have to believe that you have all the abilities, skills and inner resources to accomplish exactly what you’ve set out to do. Believing that you can achieve whatever you set your mind on is a choice you can commit to. If, even if deep down on some level, you think that something is impossible to achieve, you’re probably not going to find the motivation or energy to overcome all obstacles and make it happen. At some point your mind will talk you out it, possibly with the finish line and everything that lies beyond in sight. Negative words and thoughts have a negative and limiting influence. On the other hand, if you believe that it is possible to achieve a goal that’s important to you, you’ll do everything necessary to achieve it. To be free we have to give up any sentence that starts with “I can’t”. Freedom means believing in yourself and daring to go after your dreams. Your brain has enough power to solve any problem you give it and help you reach any goal you have. You will make it happen.
Your core essence, also known as your authentic self, has a deeper, intrinsic reality. Unlike your ego-based identity, your core existence does not depend on external approval or stories we tell about ourselves. Unlike your ego, your authentic self does not feel threatened by someone else’s success, or improved by their failure. Competition is good, but compete with nobody but yourself. At your core level everyone has the ability and resources to do abundantly well. You can visualize your ego-identity as the surface of the ocean. While you can see the movement of the water, you can’t see everything that goes on underneath. Like the water, your identity is changeable and vulnerable. It reflects the sun, sky, and clouds, and is affected by whatever direction the wind blows from. Your authentic self is the vast, calm, still, deep water underneath the surface. Those deep mysterious waters hold your true potential. Even though much of what goes on is not visible from the outside, the potential is as real as the surface you can see. And whether you realize it or not, all that potential is already there.
