Last month has been an interesting month for me, and I didn’t start it off on the right foot. The end of the Covid19 pandemic may be near, but my 4 requirements before I’ll travel again still aren’t met – so I can’t go anywhere. The press talks a lot about the “easing of Canada border restrictions” for citizens and permanent residents like me who are fully vaccinated. This is great but until they drop the testing requirements I’m not planning on going anywhere. My 4 steps don’t have much to do with the government restrictions (even though those don’t help), but everything with maximizing the experience value of that trip. And not being able to do that is starting to take a toll.

Set a Goal

It only takes one win to end a losing streak and start a winning one.

At the start of the month I set a goal. I wanted to break the pattern and start a winning streak. It only takes one win to end a losing streak and start a winning one. Here was my somewhat ambitious goal: to go running every day, except when it rains. I’ve been pretty hooked on Apple’s Fitness Plus, but it doesn’t get me out of the house. My only excuse would be the rain, because I just don’t like rain. Well, while it did rain here in Calgary, it was never during my morning runs. Except once – but by then I was so in the habit of going running that even a little rain didn’t stop me.

Achieve a Result

At the end of the month, I clocked a total of 162.9 km ran. That’s not to brag. To some it may sound a lot, to others the number may make me sound like a total running newbie. The numbers doesn’t matter. My coach even told me: throw the numbers out. What matters more is how you feel in this moment.

While the number doesn’t matter, the story behind it does. Any number only has meaning because of the story we tell ourselves (or others) about that number. The point is, the number to me would have sounded insurmountable when the month started. For many different reasons.

Forget the numbers

But forget the numbers. They don’t matter when you don’t feel well. Numbers without a story mean nothing. The point is to do a little something every day that will make you just 1% better that day. Add something new. Building your empire means adding more and new things to the mix, not less. Learn something new. And commit to stick with it for a while. And who knows – by the end of this month you could have achieved something you didn’t believe you could do at the start. If there’s anything I can do to support you, be sure to get in touch. Text me. No matter what you do, do something good for yourself today. Cheers to you, and cheers to starting something new.
