What Kind Of Universe Do We Live In?

Imagine this: You leave your home town to start your own business, but it doesn’t take off. By the time you’re 21 years old, you (and your venture) are bankrupt. Soon after that, you lose your life partner to a terminal disease. Then, in your 30s and 40s, you try to start a career in politics but end up losing one election after another. Sounds familiar? Actually this is what happened to Abraham Lincoln.
You might call this life trajectory a string of failures. When we’re faced with perceived failures and disappointment, in despair, we tend to give up entirely. Do you focus on the negative, or the positive? There’s no right or wrong in being positive or negative – it’s just a way your mind is “wired”. Some people tend to see the negative more easily, while others have a more positive predisposition.
With that in mind, ask yourself this: is our universe, the world we live in, in essence friendly or hostile – good or bad? – which answer do you tend to lean into: positive, or negative?
The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe.” ~ Albert Einstein
Friendly or hostile?
Our mind is programmed to think in dualities. Things are either good or bad, hot or cold, friendly or hostile, safe or unsafe. The main function of our mind is to keep the body safe. When you’re about to cross a road, you might hesitate since from the corner of your eye you noticed a truck speeding up towards you. Your brain send you a quick notification to alert you of the danger, and you step back – and are safe.
Thank your brain for doing its job and keeping you safe. However the world isn’t a duality. Reality isn’t a duality, one or the other – reality includes both. Reality is just what it is – which is often a mix of good and bad, right and wrong, friendly and hostile. The label we choose to place on it is just a way for our brain to help make sense of it all. Accept that, and just be with what is, right here – now – today.
When faced with adversity, we all tend to (want to) give up. Or you could do what Abraham Lincoln did and keep going. Most people that give up didn’t realize how close they were to success when they called it quits. There is no such thing as failure, as each step you take offers you an opportunity to learn and grow. No matter whether you have a positive or negative predisposition, the key is to keep going. Try something different, add something new. Even the slightest variation in how you’ve been doing things may lead to an entirely different outcome.
“We need to accept that we won’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes–understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success.” ~ Arianna Huffington
