In our fast-paced, always-on world, busyness often becomes a badge of honour. We’re permanently running on fumes, on the verge of burnout, or worse. When was the last time you intentionally paused, took a deep breath, and truly savoured the moment? The Dutch have a word for this way of life: levensgenieter1. This goes beyond being “mindful” or “present”, but actively making choices to pursue joy in this moment. It's not just a word but a lifestyle—a celebration of being a "lover of life," someone who finds joy in life's simple pleasures.

This is one of those words that don’t translate well. The closest English equivalent might be "hedonist," but let's pause before jumping to conclusions. In North America, "hedonism" is often tied to indulgence or even excess, particularly in a sexual context.2 But levensgenieter is something altogether different. It's about balance, gratitude, and authenticity—living fully, not recklessly.

At its core, levensgenieter is about embracing the beauty of life in its purest, simplest forms. And that’s ultimately what "Living by Experience" is all about. Let’s explore how this timeless Dutch philosophy can inspire you to lead a more fulfilling life.

"Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for." ~ Epicurus

Appreciating Life’s Simple Pleasures

The levensgenieter doesn’t need grandeur to feel joy. A cup of coffee brewed just right, the warmth of the morning sun, the sound of waves crashing on the shore (my personal favourite, and what keeps me running)—these are all moments not only to be savoured, but to be pursued. The point is not just to be “mindful” and present, but to add a little something to the mindful moment that makes it perfect.

So often, we overlook the ordinary, caught up in the pursuit of whatever is next on the to-do list. By cultivating an active mindful presence, we can transform even mundane activities into meaningful experiences. This is not just being passively grateful or present, but actively enjoying the moment a little more. Living by experience means noticing these moments, leaning into them, and letting them remind us of life’s inherent beauty.
